To help set a common language, we define the following key terms below:
an object, system, or service that a customer can use - or - a feature of your project that has the capacity to be sustained, scaled, or transferred beyond the pilot.
deploying a pilot or program locally and identifying a way to sustain the effort of your pilot beyond the life of the NSF grant.
growing the scope of your pilot or the breadth of its outreach and impact. For example: your pilot takes place in 1-2 neighborhoods, and expands to 3+ neighborhoods in the same city; or, your pilot grows its product capability such as offering expanded services.
deploying your product/project in a new location. For example: your 12 month pilot takes place in Little Rock, and the product is able to launch in a new location such as Wichita.
As you will see in the Self Assessment and Analysis, one critical key indicator of success for your product’s Sustainability, Transferability, and Scalability is the early identification of what will happen with your product at the end of the CIVIC grant. The exercise of identifying a Path Forward for your product is also integral to using the Guidebook section of the Playbook, where you can find resources for the three general options to continue your work beyond the grant:
-
Hand Off: Building partnerships that can can help you share your project more efficiently (or even hand it off to a new organization or license it) (Partnership Development Resources)
-
Knowledge Transfer: Creating an “open source” resource or other such tool/system to effectively share your knowledge with others, both in your community and other communities (Knowledge Transfer Resources)
-
New Venture: Commercializing your product to create a new company (Business Strategy Resources)
